Financial data network connecting apps to bank accounts
Plaid is the leading financial data network that connects consumer and business banking data to financial applications through secure APIs. Founded in 2013, Plaid powers the account linking and bank data layer for thousands of financial apps including Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, Chime, and Acorns. Plaid Link is the embeddable UI that users see when connecting their bank account to an app, covering 12,000+ financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK, and Europe. Beyond data access, Plaid's product suite includes Plaid Auth for instant account verification for ACH payments, Plaid Identity for KYC verification, Plaid Transactions for enriched spending data, Plaid Assets for income and asset verification in lending, and Plaid Investments for brokerage data. Plaid Signal uses ML to predict ACH return risk, reducing payment failures and fraud. Plaid Transfer enables ACH payment initiation with lower return rates than standard ACH. The company's planned acquisition by Visa for $5.3 billion was blocked by regulators in 2021, after which Plaid raised $425 million independently at a $13.4 billion valuation. Plaid's network effects—covering virtually all major US financial institutions—create a significant moat. Its compliance and security infrastructure meets the stringent requirements of major financial institutions. Plaid continues to expand its product suite toward becoming the comprehensive financial services infrastructure layer.
